Winter, Waves and Whales
Although Hawaii is known for its wonderful weather and tropical sunshine, winter is also a great season to visit the islands. Storms in the South Pacific Ocean generate gigantic waves which travel thousands of miles before they unleash their energy on the beautiful north shores of Hawaii. A number of world-class surfing tournaments are held every winter in Hawaii, the most famous being the Eddie Aikau Invitational -- held only when waves reach a minimum of six meters.
For students who aren't yet ready to surf the big waves, Global Village Hawaii's English + Surfing package include surfing lessons twice a week at Waikiki beach on Oahu's south shore--where waves average less than one meter.
Another fascinating sight to see are the whales which migrate annually to the Hawaiian Islands. A great way to view these titans of the sea is from one of the many whale watching tour boats; however, whales can often be seen from the coasts around the islands. Whale watching cruises are some of the more popular activities at Global Village Hawaii during the winter months. |
