English in the Community Club

Free conversation practice and a warm, happy feeling

The English in the Community Club at GV Vancouver is a wonderful, cost-effective way for students to practice English outside of the classrooms.

Every Friday at 1:00 pm after class, teachers Dawn Morris or Inger-Lise Burns meet with students to help them find after-school volunteer opportunities in the community with charities, city events, and other organizations. There are hundreds of organizations looking for reliable volunteers and helpers.

Last May, a few Japanese students volunteered to help with translating and office work for the Vancouver International Marathon. The students became part of the community. They learned valuable practical skills and made long-lasting friendships in the process. It was quite an emotional experience for them.

Other GV students have volunteered at Immigrant Services Society. This organization helps newcomers to Canada with English lessons, finding employment, and other challenges that immigrants often face. All the detailed information is posted regularly on the information boards at Gastown and Yaletown campuses, and meetings are held every Friday at 1:00 PM.
