Global Village Hawaii's Writing Contest

GVH held its first writing contest for students. Full-time and part-time students (levels 5-7) enrolled in General English, Cambridge FCE/CAE preparation courses, and the TOEFL preparation course entered essays and other materials written in GVH classes for this contest.

Contest

Winners

There were two categories: essays and open writings. Many students submitted entries which gave the judges a very difficult time choosing the winning essay -- "the quality of all the submissions was great!" -- GVH teacher.

The winners of the contest (by level and course) were: Ayako Ashikawa (level 6), Akane Kato (level 7), and Adrian Eschenmoser (Cambridge FCE). Due to the success of this writing contest, GVH faculty have decided to open the contest to all levels of students and to hold the contest on a regular basis.

Chili Fund Raiser

In order to support the Hawaii Foodbank, teachers and students organized a fund raiser and sold Zippy's famous chili! Teacher Seary Figueroa-Seary talked about the problems of homelessness and ways to help as part of her classes this past term.

Inspired by her words, her students helped to raise funds for Hawaii Foodbank and set up a canned food drive as well.

Business English Newsletter

The second GVH student newspaper was published this term with the help from students and our dedicated faculty. Winning entries from the GVH writing contest were published in this edition for other students to read.

Teachers Sherene Ariffin and Florian Rouch did a great job organizing and motivating the students to create this newspaper. Students who really want to challenge themselves and improve their writing skills in English have given very positive feedback on this project. Stay tuned -- more to come!
