BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA

GV Brisbane on YouTube:

GV Australia’s brand new DVD, which will be sent out very shortly to all of our local partners around the world, is now available on YouTube. The three-minute feature on GV Brisbane, which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/GVBrisbane provides a great introduction to the school, its staff, facilities and details of studying in Australia's "most liveable city". From this page it is also possible to follow links to the other DVD chapters on Study Options, Accommodation and Work & Play. If you would like to share any feedback with us on the content, please feel free to add a few words to the 'Comments' section at the bottom of the page – it's always great to know what you think!

Guided Individual Learning:

As part of Global Village's 360 degree care and commitment to students' individual learning needs, Guided Individual Learning (GIL) is one of GV Brisbane's unique selling points and extremely popular with students. When she first arrived from Chiba in Japan, Yuko Ikeda visited a number of schools in Brisbane, but it was the chance to follow a programme which included GIL that convinced her that Global Village was the best choice for her.

On arrival students at GV Brisbane undergo a careful assessment of their unique learning requirements and areas in need of particular attention, such as listening, grammar, vocabulary or speaking. Student and teacher then sit down and create a Guided Individual Learning plan, which the student undertakes using the wide selection of self-access materials available in the school and the teacher monitors carefully via a series of one-to-one discussions with the student.

Yuko says: "In the morning we had the same teacher each day but the classes were very different. In the afternoon I selected an Option Class to help me with vocabulary and I learnt a lot. The best though, for me, was the GIL because in this class I really could improve "my mistakes" and the teacher who looks after this class is excellent!!! Sometimes though if I did not want to do GIL I did an activity like the 'cooking class' instead, and that was a lot of fun. The main reason (for taking GIL) is you can reach your own goals. The school helps me by offering advice and monitoring what I am doing so I can really achieve what I want to achieve. That is the main point."

"English Out & About" Goes from Strength to Strength

Since its launch earlier in the year, GV Brisbane’s “English Out & About” programme has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most popular study options available in the school.

English Out & About, GV Brisbane

The weekly syllabus consists of 10 hours of authentic input and interaction combined with 5 hours of classroom-based analysis and 5 hours of structured preparation.

The daily "Out & About" task requires students to complete a daily task of gathering information from native speakers in the local community or from a variety of authentic texts such as newspapers, brochures and other sources.

On completion of the tasks, students return to a classroom environment in order to review, interpret and consolidate the key learning points from the "Out & About" session, and this is then followed by a preparatory session for the following day's scheduled "Out & About" task.

Recent classes have been filling up quickly as word spreads about the practical benefits of the programme and how quickly students progress when using English in real situations on a daily basis – the programme is also a bargain, as all activities are included at the same price as a regular General English programme.
